How to balance technology and healthy development for children?

In recent years, the presence of digital devices such as smartphones, tablets, and televisions has become a familiar part of family life. Even at preschool age, many children can operate these digital devices with ease. This raises a highly topical question for parents and educators: how does early screen exposure affect a child’s holistic development? And more importantly, how can we strike a balance between technology and the natural developmental needs of young children?
The Preschooler's Brain and the Need for Direct Experiences

According to neuroscience, the period from 0 to 6 years old is the time of fastest brain development, with millions of neural connections formed every second (Shonkoff & Phillips, 2000). These connections are primarily built through direct experiences with the real world, including physical movement, social interaction, free play, and sensory exploration.
Research indicates that excessive screen time can reduce the time children spend in experience-rich activities, thereby affecting the development of brain regions associated with language, self-regulation, and social skills (Christakis et al., 2018).
Screens and Children's Emotional Self-Regulation
One of the greatest concerns among contemporary psychologists is the impact of screens on the emotional self-regulation of preschoolers. Digital content is often fast-paced, highly visual, and filled with sound effects, which conditions a child's brain to a high level of stimulation.
According to Radesky and colleagues (2016), children who frequently use digital devices are at a higher risk of experiencing difficulties with waiting, impulse control, and managing negative emotions. When screens become the primary tool to soothe or calm a child, the child has fewer opportunities to learn how to self-soothe through social interaction and real-life experiences.
Technology Is Not the "Enemy" if Used Properly
However, modern research also emphasizes that technology is not entirely negative. The issue is not whether or not to use screens, but how they are used. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP, 2016), high-quality digital content, accompanied by an adult, can support a child's language and cognitive development.
When adults watch, talk, and connect screen content to real life together with the child, the child has the opportunity to turn a digital experience into a meaningful learning experience. This is particularly important in the context of modern early childhood education, where technology is increasingly integrated into the learning environment.
The Role of Play and Social Interaction in "Balancing" Screen Time

From the perspective of developmental psychology, free play and social interaction are irreplaceable foundations for preschoolers. Vygotsky (1978) suggested that children learn best through interaction with others within meaningful social contexts. Through play, children learn how to negotiate, share, resolve conflicts, and understand their own emotions as well as those of others.
When screen time is balanced with physical movement, outdoor play, arts, and face-to-face interactions, children are given ample opportunities to develop holistically physically, cognitively, and socio-emotionally.
Guidance for Families and Schools
Current studies unanimously agree that collaboration between families and schools plays a pivotal role in guiding children toward healthy technology use. Establishing clear routines, setting age-appropriate screen time limits, and prioritizing real-life experiences help children form a balanced relationship with technology from an early age.
More importantly, adults need to serve as role models by practicing mindful digital device use, as children learn the most through observation and imitation.
